Helping Your Elderly Loved One to Be More Independent

Updated: Apr 29, 2022

As your elderly loved one gets older, they might start to lose some of their independence. This is just a normal part of aging. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t help them to continue being independent longer. Just because they are aging, that doesn’t mean that they can’t keep doing things on their own. In fact, there are some things you, other family members, and elder care providers can do to help increase independence in your elderly loved one.

Encouraging Them to Be Active

It is important that your elderly loved one is active every day. Even if they can take a small walk every day, this can significantly help them to stay more independent. Physical activity can help to strengthen the mind, strengthen muscles in the body, and improve other aspects of health, as well. By doing this, your elderly loved one will be able to continue doing more tasks on their own.

Help Them to Socialize

Humans need to socialize. If your elderly loved one is going to keep living their best life possible, socializing is going to help them to do that. In addition, socializing can help to give your elderly loved one the sense of purpose and connection they need. By having these things, your elderly loved one will have a lower risk of depression and feeling hopeless, which in turn, will give them the motivation and energy they need to keep doing things on their own.

Doing Household Chores

If your elderly loved one is going to stay independent for longer, they are going to need to keep doing things. They should do the dishes, laundry, and other household chores if they can still do so. This doesn’t mean that they have to do everything on their own. However, if they continue to do these things, their mind and body will stay strong.

Make Sure the House is Safe

If your elderly loved one wants to keep living on their own, you can help them to do that by making sure their house is safe. Be sure there aren’t a bunch of things lying around that could cause your elderly loved one to fall. Make sure there is enough lighting in your elderly loved one’s home to help them see, even at night. Reducing your elderly loved one’s fall risk can help them to stay independent.

There are many ways that you can help your elderly loved one to be more independent. If you follow the tips mentioned here today, you can help your elderly loved one to keep doing things on their own and to stay living in their own home for longer.
