Creating a Team to Help Care for Your Elderly Loved One

Updated: Apr 29, 2022

If you live far away from your elderly loved one, but you need to help care for them, there are things that you can do. One of the things that you can do is to create a team that can help provide care for your loved one. This team will be able to offer your elderly loved one the care and support they need.

Doctors

Your elderly loved one should have at least one doctor (their primary care physician). This is the doctor that your elderly loved one will see for regular visits. However, if your elderly loved one has health issues such as heart problems, seizures, or other serious conditions, they will need to see specialists, as well. Be sure that everyone involved in your loved one’s care has a list of their doctor’s phone numbers.

Friends, Neighbors, and Other Family Members

Some other people who can be a part of your elderly loved one’s team are friends, neighbors, and other family members. You can set up a schedule for these people to stop in and check on your elderly loved one. If someone can’t make it to your loved one’s home, they can call to chat with your loved one. It is important that someone is checking in on your elderly loved one at least twice a week. If your elderly loved one has health issues, they should be checked on more often.

Caregivers

You can also hire caregivers to help care for your elderly loved one. These caregivers can come to your loved one’s home. They can provide meal prep, light cleaning, companionship, support, medication management, and watch over your loved one’s overall well-being. Your elderly loved one might only need one of the caregivers to come once a week or they might need them to come every single day.

Conclusion

These are some of the people who can be a part of your elderly loved one’s care team. If you can make it to visit your loved one every once in a while, that would be great. However, there are other people who can be a part of your loved one’s care team. You can provide care from a distance. For instance, if you can’t get to their home, you can handle their finances and other things online. You can also communicate with your elderly loved one on video chats, as well.
